Final Project [Research]

Artist: Dr. Sulaiman Esa

Artist Background:
Dr. Sulaiman Esa is one of the most brilliant and spiritual Malaysia around. His previous works basically very much inspired and influenced by the Islamic values and its calligraphic strokes and technique.

He is also among of the earliest and perhaps the few artist who follow a strict and maintain the guideline of producing art with Islamic value and principles. He came into this industry of art and design is about during the 1980's year when the government of Malaysia in its effort to promote Islamic values and principles within the Malay and Muslim community drew many initiatives and brilliant in the Islamic programme in 1982.

Dr. Sulaiman Esa's works was best manifested during the time when he wanted to inject an internationalist and multicultural frames that draw inspirations and design from the fundamentals of Islam to be used in contemporary art form and design. Dr. Sulaiman Esa is recognized and well known as one of the most visionary artists in the Malaysian scene.

Project Title:
Raja'ah : Art, Idea and Creativity [1950 - 2011]

Project Venue:
National Art Gallery

(Raja'ah)

This exhibition is more than meets the eye. Sulaiman Esa has dived into the core of Malaysian identity and values using elements of pop culture. The artiste is basically trying to break free from the stereotyping mind of the hegemony of Western culture. Interesting enough, he managed to combine Captain America and Darth Vader paper cut into works that rooted in Islamic principals and geometry.

The artist’s driving philosophy was the quest to break free from the hegemony of Western culture and to create a uniquely Malaysian cultural identity. He strived for this in his works, blending local materials and techniques with pop culture. Captain America and Darth Vader papercuts suddenly appear in what initially seem like works specifically rooted in Islamic principles of geometry and repetition, and Sulaiman’s ‘Beauty in Diversity’ pieces celebrate Malaysia’s multicultural flavour without once stepping into that dreaded realm of cheesy.
This exhibition is unexpected, different at every angle, and proof that if you look, there are some absolute gems in Malaysian art. More history on the artist would’ve been nice, but the exhibition scores top points for its breadth. Gallery 3B has many of Sulaiman’s old works (landscapes from his youth, homages to Van Gogh and the Impressionists), there’s a video of the artist in conversation with the curator, and a huge work called ‘Panopticon’ in Gallery 3A, which the artist made with his video artist son, Fairuz Sulaiman.

Assignment 2

DIGITAL ART AND CULTURE

· Study the Digital Art and Culture festival

Define Festival

Digital Art and Culture festival or known as DA+C is a great and brilliant program with the vision for Malaysia’s creative economy by positioning Penang as the center or ‘Creative Digital Hub’ in South-East-Asia. This festival is a three days event that allows visitors to experience themselves in interpretations through interactive digital art. These specific works will celebrate Suffolk’s history and make it as interactive cultural world.

Objective of the Festival

There were two main objectives in this event. Firstly is to engage and excite the public about learning the local history and culture. Secondly, this event was created to extend the life of analogue-based history into digital data and interpretations. In advance, the entire local artist who involved in that event or festival decided to interpret their idea to explain about history and culture by using new media technology such as interactive application, installation art, audio visual performance, live visual and audio performance.

Details of the Festival

Digital Festival and Culture feature projects are the interactive artworks and video mapping projection. They are educational-tools that are disguised as media entertainment. All the interactive art project and pieces which are installed in selected rooms will be explored a facet of Suffolk’s past or Georgetown’s history. For example, the user can interact with characters from Penang’s past like Captain Francis Light. The video projection will bring the audience back into Light’s time by resurrecting the characters and events and that took place in the house. The video projection project is set to culminate the whole story of Suffolk House by including the architecture.

Project Details

Team Project: MOTIOFIXO!

Type of Installation: Video Projection Mapping

Title of the project: The Story of Suffolk House

Project Description

Video Mapping will be used to tell the story about Suffolk House through creative way by combination of animation and video montage used to re-create scenes in history. Beginning with the plot of land that Suffolk House rests on, the audience itself will witness the different stages of the house from its glory period in the 1800’s abandonment, deterioration and to its present state of conversation.

How Do They Utilize New Media

MOTIOFIXO! is a team of young energetic designers specializing in Visual Communication. In order to gain an extremely ideas for something that can make all the audience feel amaze with their project, they used a video projection mapping to express their understanding on history of the Suffolk House. In this projection mapping, they attempt to make the audience feel the emotional, historical and massive surrounding of the Suffolk House. They tried to make the audience understood on what are they doing in this project by rearranged back the history from the beginning of the Georgetown’s past stories. The arrangement of the project was very brilliant by using a great projector to project their video mapping to the Suffolk House itself, the sound system was very great and because of that all the audience can feel their surrounding just like in year 1800.

(exact building of the projection)

What Way Does It Enhance the Artist Concept

In my opinion, the concept of this project was very brilliant because they not only used a video mapping to explain or to express the history of Suffolk House but they also put a big effort by putting a voice over to make the project can be more understood by the audience. It means that whenever the audience can’t understand much about the video mapping, the voice over will help them out to make sure that the video mapping was full of story that can interpret how the Suffolk House begins with. This project was undeniable and very good piece but in the other things, the video mapping will become more epic and great if they try to put more information and that can makes the video projection mapping is much more longer in terms of duration of the project so the audience will gain more experiences on that project.

How Do Artist Use New Media Technology to Convey Their Artistic Concept

In this project, they have brilliant ideas to apply New Media Technology in their project by using projector and the video montage will directly project to the building that they have been doing their research for which is Suffolk House. If they used an old media to explain and to make an audience understand about history of that house, the audience might as well get bored and they can’t even feel the environment of the building when it was built in 1800. They came out with the idea of this project is to make the audience know about history of the Suffolk House itself and attempt to make they understand by showing the video montage and also a voice over that the team have just made. Besides that, by using the video projection mapping, this project can attract more audience to see and to feel the projection environment by their self and not just by hearing or reading information about the Suffolk House. Combination of a video montage, voice over and information is a very great project in information-based project. They figure out about the stage of this projection was very great concept because the audience will be more satisfy to see the video montage in a bigger stage. If this projection was project to the small stage, the environment, feeling and surrounding will be not the same compared to the bigger stage.

What Kind of Cultural, Humanistic Values is Conveyed, Achieved Through the Work?

In this project, I can see that they used a multiple type of style such as a very old environment that we can see the beginning of the Suffolk House was made by wood and the roof was made by palm fronds. We also can see the handwriting of the agreement by Francis Light and Sultan Kedah which is Sultan Abdullah was from old generation fonts in that time. Anglo-Indian Georgian who was the one changing the architecture of the Suffolk House and because of that the culture and humanistic at that time were also changed because of the development of that area. After Anglo-Indian Georgia build up the Suffolk House back, the people and the culture were like living their life in happiness and peaceful before World War begin. After the World War two, Suffolk House and the whole environment including the culture become mess up and no one going to take care of the Suffolk House building anymore because they all still scared and trauma about the World War two even though the war has declare to stop it. With the trusted that Penang State gain on that building, they build back the Suffolk House in conjunction with the State Government, HSBC Bank, investor and business cooperation.
